Our Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) business continues to perform and grow strongly, and we’re looking for a Backend Engineer within the Loyalty team in Commercial Technology to help scale On’s online business to the next level. The Loyalty team is building the backbone of On’s customer engagement and retention platform, powering personalized experiences, membership programs, and reward mechanisms across our global ecosystem. As a Backend Engineer, you’ll design, build, test, deploy, and operate digital services that shape how millions of consumers connect with On. You’ll be based in our Berlin office, working in close collaboration with cross-functional teams in Zurich, London, and other global hubs.
The Senior Specialist - Software Engineer III role will report to the Senior Lead - Engineering Manager on the Customer Communication platform team, supporting teams within Commerce Technology.
Your Mission
- You will build and maintain the Loyalty (DTC) by providing APIs, real-time events and documentation to reduce the cognitive load and enable stream-aligned teams to rapidly deliver premium, personalized experiences across all consumer touch points
- You iteratively deliver value and quality with your solutions to meet both technical and internal consumer needs
- Provide services, events, and documentation that enable stream-aligned teams to quickly build on top of the customer platform
- With the team, you will build, release and operate complex systems. You will own and evolve the architecture (by leading decision making through RFCs) that scales for millions of customers across the globe
- Participate in and drive architectural decision-making through RFCs and design reviews to ensure scalability and resilience.
- Take responsibility for reliability, uptime, and operational excellence in production environments
- You will act as an expert in the given technology area, leverage best in class engineering practices including continuous integration and deployment, code reviews, high test coverage and allowing for observability
- You collaborate effectively through verbal and written communication with diverse teams and stakeholders and drive alignment beyond the team.
- You will engage in the engineering community by sharing knowledge, mentoring your team mates, receiving / providing feedback or growing our team by supporting the hiring
- Share knowledge, mentor peers, and engage in the broader On engineering community, contributing to our culture of learning and craftsmanship
Your story
- You have 5-6 years of backend experience designing, building, testing, releasing and operating scalable systems with a strong problem-solving mindset striving for excellence and taking full accountability
- You have strong experience within the NodeJS (TypeScript) eco-system and basic understanding of Ruby, designing and developing APIs (bonus if you have experience with GraphQL and NestJS)
- You have experience working with and designing distributed systems. You are competent in building and designing event driven systems (e.g. using Kafka). You have mastered automated testing, TDD, and performance debugging tools and you are hands-on with operating the infrastructure on AWS or GCP
- You are comfortable using containerized workloads and clusters like Kubernetes
- You facilitate discussion as well as guide and mentor your peers by delivering praise and constructive feedback
- You have a product mindset that makes you comfortable in owning and building features from the ground up, understanding the “why”, applying holistic thinking and delivering for impact using experimentation
