Overview - BWF  

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is the world governing body for the sport and has its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 

Badminton has been an Olympic Games sport since the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games and a sport on the Paralympic programme since 2014 making its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The BWF has 201 Members (national badminton associations) responsible for regulating and developing badminton in their territory. 

Continental Confederations administer, manage and develop the sport together with the Members in their region. There are five Continental Confederations: Badminton Africa, Badminton Asia, Badminton Europe, Badminton Oceania and Badminton Pan America.

The BWF, its Members, and Continental Confederations work together in a coordinated approach to develop the sport worldwide. 

The BWF Council is the governing board and is responsible for strategic direction, policy development and administrative guidance, and oversees the work of the BWF between Annual General Meetings (AGMs). The Council is appointed by the AGM for a four-year term. 

The Secretary General, responsible for day-to-day operations, is accountable to the Council. The BWF currently has a staff of 52. The BWF corporate website provides a wide range of information on BWF’s governance, operations, regulations, as well as annual plans and activities.

Reports To Head of Tournament Development

Overall Duties Manages the following areas within the Events Department:

  • World Ranking, Tournament, and Draw Management systems for Badminton, Para Badminton, and AirBadminton.
  • Other areas where support may be needed:
    • Technical Officials programmes;
    • AirBadminton and Para Badminton tournament delivery;
    • Working closely with Continental Confederations towards the development and sustainability of Continental Circuit tournaments.; and
    • Athlete Services.

Responsibilities  
Under the leadership of the Head of Tournament Development, the Technical Events Manager is responsible for:

1. The effective implementation of World Ranking, Tournament, and Draw Management systems for badminton, Para badminton, and AirBadminton:

  • Ensure all tournament and draw management processes are implemented to the highest standards, including tournament sanctioning, BWF tournament calendar, entries, withdrawal and penalty processes, prize money processes, player transfer processes, seeding and draw processes, results management, and World Rankings;
  • Effective communication with tournament host organisations and Member Associations;
  • Support the development of all competition Laws, regulations, and policies, and ensure they are implemented as approved by Council, including on-going review and analysis of tournament data for planning and policy considerations;
  • Work closely with the Digital Technology team to ensure that any system-related changes that link to regulations and rankings are monitored and tested; and
  • Ensure accurate information on tournament-related matters are provided to all relevant stakeholders.

2. Other areas of support (as needed):

  • Assist the Head of Technical Officials with Technical Officials programmes;
  • Assist the Head of Tournament Development with the effective planning for, and delivery of, Para badminton and AirBadminton tournaments;
  • Working with Continental Confederations, Member Associations, BWF Event staff, and other BWF Departments, provide solutions for the development and sustainability of Grade 3 (Continental Circuit level) tournaments, including structural, regulatory, and commercial initiatives; and
  • Athlete Services, including the assistance and support to athlete advocacy, professional development, commercial and media-related activation, education, and other programmes.

3. Other projects as assigned.

  • An ability to work in a team environment and has worked in multi-cultural environments before.

The successful candidate will have the following knowledge and experience:

  • Tournament management experience.
  • Badminton technical experience (event management at the highest levels will be an advantage).
  • Technical officials experience—both in practice and managerial terms, would be an advantage.
  • Athlete experience—both in practice and managerial terms, would be an advantage.

Selection Criteria      

Candidates for the position will require a range of personal and professional skills to be considered for the role. The key criteria below will be used as a basis for short listing candidates for the interview phase. 

Applications for the position must address each criterion, providing examples from their experience / employment background.

a) Qualifications and Experience

  1. Relevant formal qualifications – a degree in events/business/marketing/ communication management or general sports administration;
  2. Significant and relevant experience in events management (preferably badminton), including experience in, tournament/technical management, and technical officials;
  3. Experience in working in multi-cultural work environments;

b) Knowledge and Skills

  1. A solid understanding of technical and event delivery areas of badminton.
  2. Excellent interpersonal skills and proven capacity to support the work of others.
  3. Strong planning and organisational skills. 
  4. Demonstrated ability to problem-solve.
  5. Ability to prioritize large volumes of work and manage priorities.
  6. Excellent English written and spoken language skills and presentation skills. 
  7. Understanding of the events/commercial/technical areas, sports industry and the role of an international federation / world body in the structure of an Olympic/Paralympic Games sport.

c) Personal Attributes

  1. A positive outlook to employment and a person that takes pride in the quality of work.
  2. Ability to work in a team environment and has worked in multi-cultural environments before.
  3. Capacity to work independently, with minimal supervision, and have a strong work ethic.

Remuneration      
Negotiated with the successful candidate depending on qualifications and experience. 

Contract      
A contract period will be offered to the successful candidate. Length of the contract to be discussed.
Performance appraisals, against mutually agreed performance objectives will be a regular part of employment.

Hours of Work
The position is contracted and full time. The nature of the work requires flexibility during busy periods and will involve work on weekends and at times during holidays. 

The position will also require travel overseas. No time in lieu arrangement exist for additional hours worked. 

The remuneration package will reflect experience, the extent of the role, level of responsibilities, and the work requirements needed.
