Overview – BWF

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is the world governing body for the sport and has its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 

Badminton has been an Olympic Games sport since the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games and a sport on the Paralympic programme since 2014 making its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The BWF has 201 Members (national badminton associations) responsible for regulating and developing badminton in their territory. 

Continental Confederations administer, manage and develop the sport together with the Members in their region. There are five Continental Confederations: Badminton Africa, Badminton Asia, Badminton Europe, Badminton Oceania and Badminton Pan America.

The BWF, its Members, and Continental Confederations work together in a coordinated approach to develop the sport worldwide. 

The BWF Council is the governing board and is responsible for strategic direction, policy development and administrative guidance, and oversees the work of the BWF between Annual General Meetings (AGMs). The Council is appointed by the AGM for a four-year term. 

The Secretary General, responsible for day-to-day operations, is accountable to the Council. The BWF currently has a staff of 52. The BWF corporate website provides a wide range of information on BWF’s governance, operations, regulations, as well as annual plans and activities.

Overall Duties

Reporting to the Head of World Tour, the Tournament Manager will be responsible for the effective implementation of the BWF host agreements with each Member Association hosting a BWF World Tour event.  

In particular, the Tournament Manager will ensure the effective implementation of the BWF commercial and media rights agreements with the host, provide support to the Technical Officials (BWF Referee, Umpires and Line Judges) at the tournament and work alongside the BWF marketing & communications team when they are present at the tournament.

Core Responsibilities
The key responsibilities of the position are to:

  • Assist the Head of World Tour & Events Directors in the effective delivery of the BWF World Tour and World Tour;
  • Ensure the effective implementation of the host organisers contract with BWF;
  • Ensure the effective implementation of the BWF contract obligations with the BWF World Tour title sponsors;
  • Ensure the effective implementation of the BWF contract television production obligations with the BWF Media Rights Agency;
  • Help ensure all BWF World Tour/BWF Tour competition regulations and technical and branding guidelines as approved by the BWF Council / membership are applied;
  • Regularly review the BWF World Tour/BWF Tour competition regulations and technical and branding guidelines to identify areas which lack clarity and make recommendations to the Head of World Tour, Events Directors and Events Committee and relevant partners on changes;
  • Effectively communicate changes to BWF World Tour/BWF Tour competition regulations, technical and branding guidelines in a timely manner and ensure they are implemented;
  • Attend BWF World Tour/BWF Tour tournaments as necessary and agreed with Events Director and Head of World Tour;
  • When attending BWF World Tour/BWF Tour tournaments also attend the team managers meetings;
  • Support the general work of the Events Department;
  • Support the general work of the Events Department and also ensure it is carried out efficiently and accurately – including but not limited to these key processes;
  • Implementation of BWF World Tour/BWF Tour Competition Regulations;
  • Implementation of BWF World Tour/BWF Tour Brand Guidelines;
  • Implementation of BWF World Tour/BWF Tour Technical Guidelines;
  • Support BWF Technical Officials at BWF World Tour/BWF Tour tournaments;
  • Where appropriate and in conjunction with the Head of World Tour and or Events Director work with local organisers of BWF World Tour/BWF Tour tournaments including the referee to provide advice and support on the event presentation and delivery in addition to the obligations of the BWF Competition regulations, brand and technical guidelines;
  • Support in the delivery of BWF Major Championships as required;
  • Assist where appropriate with work related to the BWF communication strategy and plans, especially communication related to the BWF World Tour, BWF Tour, the BWF website and from time to time assisting/advising the BWF communications team;
  • Other tasks and work as directed by the Head of World Tour and or Events Director from time to time and as necessary.

Qualities / Attributes / Experience  

The successful candidate will have the following skills and attributes:

  • Have excellent written and spoken English language skills.
  • Have excellent organisational skills.
  • Be a good planner.
  • Be an effective communicator with good interpersonal skills.

The successful candidate will have the following knowledge and experience:

  • Sport/tournament event operations and management.
  • Technical event delivery and commercialisation.
  • Personnel management (multi-cultural working environments will be an advantage).
  • Badminton experience (event management at the highest levels will be a significant advantage).
  • Athlete experience—both in practice and managerial terms, would be an advantage.

Selection Criteria

Candidates for the position will require a range of personal and professional skills to be considered for the role. The key criteria below will be used as a basis for short listing candidates for the interview phase.

a) Qualifications and Experience

  1. Relevant formal qualifications – a degree in events management / marketing / sports administration degree or similar.
  2. Experience in administration roles.
  3. Has worked on projects in previous employment, preferably in badminton or another sport.

b) Knowledge and Skills

  1. Strong people / interpersonal skills;
  2. Excellent English written and spoken language skills;
  3. Knowledge and understanding of badminton would be an advantage for this role;
  4. Understanding of the events/commercial/technical areas, sports industry and the role of an international federation / world body in the structure of an Olympic/Paralympic Games sport;
  5. Demonstrate ability to problem solve.

c) Personal Attributes

  1. A positive outlook on employment and takes pride in the quality of work;
  2. An ability to work in a team environment and has worked in multi-cultural environment before;
  3. Able to work independently with minimal supervision on assigned tasks / projects;
  4. Able to multi-task and work on several projects at the same time.

Remuneration

To be negotiated with the successful candidate depending on qualifications and experience.

An expected remuneration should be stated in the application.

Contract

A contract period will be offered to the successful candidate. Length of the contract to be discussed.
Performance appraisals, against mutually agreed performance objectives will be a regular part of employment.

Hours of Work

The position is contracted and full time. The nature of the work sometimes requires flexibility during busy periods particularly in the lead up to a tournament and/or including working on weekends, and during BWF Council, Events Committee and related meetings.

The position requires travel overseas inclusive of weekends but no time in lieu arrangement exist for additional hours worked and travel on weekends.

The remuneration package will reflect experience, extent of the role, level of responsibilities and the work requirements needed.
