Full Description
Position Summary:
The operator is responsible for setting up equipment, monitoring its performance, and making adjustments as needed to maintain optimal production levels. Additionally, the operator conducts routine inspections and troubleshoots issues. This role demands a proactive approach to problem-solving and a strong work ethic to maintain the high standards of production expected in the manufacturing industry.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Machine Operation:
- Set up and operate the Polar cutter machine to cut printed materials to specified dimensions, prepare materials for cutting by aligning and stacking them accurately.
- Program the cutter machine using control panels or software to ensure precise cutting patterns.
- Conversion Between Imperial and Metric Units.
- Dual Measurement Display: Knowledge of using or setting up machine displays and measurement tools that can show both units simultaneously.
- Machine Settings: Adjusting the back gauge and cutting position settings on the machine using the correct units based on job specifications to achieve precise cuts and consistent quality.
- Load a specific number of full sheets of the specific job and material onto the machine to begin the machine setup.
- Material Cutting: Ensuring that the material to be cut matches the specified dimensions, whether provided in inches or millimeters.
- Interpreting Mixed Specifications: Ability to handle job specifications that might provide measurements in both metric and imperial units and convert them correctly for machine programming.
Efficiency and Productivity:
- Ensure that production processes are running at peak efficiency, with minimal downtime and waste.
- Monitor the production process to ensure it runs smoothly and efficiently, adjusting as needed.
- Work efficiently to meet production targets and deadlines without compromising on quality.
- Optimize cutting sequences to maximize material usage and minimize waste.
Quality Control:
- Perform initial test cuts and inspect samples to ensure accuracy and adherence to specifications.
- Continuously monitor the cutting process to detect and correct any deviations from quality standards, including measuring dimensions.
- Inspect and measure finished products to ensure they meet quality standards and customer specifications.
- Document and report any deviations or quality issues to the Production Supervisor.
- Make necessary adjustments to the machine to correct any issues and maintain high-quality standards.
Maintenance:
- Perform routine maintenance on the Polar cutter machine, including blade changes, lubrication, and cleaning.
- Troubleshoot and resolve minor mechanical issues to prevent downtime.
- Coordinate with maintenance teams for more complex repairs or servicing needs.
Safety Compliance:
- Adhere to safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for oneself and others.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required and ensure that safety guards and devices are in place and functional.
- Report any safety hazards or incidents to the appropriate personnel immediately.
- Knowledge of all safety features on the Polar cutting machine, including emergency stops, safety guards, and cut-stop functions.
- Ensure that safety guards and devices are in place and functional before starting the machine.
Troubleshooting:
- Identify and troubleshoot issues with machinery or products, and report problems to supervisors or maintenance teams.
Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of production activities, including output quantities, machine settings, downtime and any issues encountered.
- Complete production logs and quality control reports as required.
- Report any equipment malfunctions, material defects, or safety concerns to the supervisor immediately.
Inventory:
- Report shortages or discrepancies to supervisors to ensure continuous production.
Teamwork:
- Work closely with other operators, technicians, and supervisors to achieve production goals and resolve issues.
- Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments to ensure smooth workflow and address any production issues.
Training:
- Participate in training programs to stay current with industry standards and company procedures.
- Assist in training new operators in Polar cutter machine use and safety practices.
Minimum Requirements:
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent
Skills/Experience:
- Previous experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Proficiency in operating manufacturing machinery.
- Proficiency in measurement conversions: Ability to convert between metric and imperial units (e.g., inches to millimeters, millimeters to inches) and perform accurate measurements using both systems.
- Imperial to Metric Conversions:
1 inch = 25.4 millimeters
1 foot = 30.48 centimeters
Metric to Imperial Conversions:
1 millimeter = 0.03937 inches
1 centimeter = 0.3937 inches
- Experience with measurement tools: Rulers and Tape Measures: Knowing how to read both metric and imperial units on rulers and tape measures. Calipers: Using calipers to measure dimensions in both millimeters and inches accurately. Digital Measuring Devices: Using digital devices that can switch between units, ensuring precision in conversions.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality: Demonstrates accuracy in reading, interpreting and applying measurements to machine set up and material cutting.
- Avoiding Conversion Errors: Understanding the importance of accuracy in conversions to prevent material waste or production errors due to incorrect dimensions. Double-Checking Work: Routinely verifying conversions and measurements to ensure compliance with job specifications.
- Computer skills for data entry and report generation.
- Good communication skills and ability to work in a team.
- Basic mechanical skills for minor equipment repairs and maintenance.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
Physical Demands:
Specific eyesight requirements:
- Ability to distinguish between colors.
- Visual acuity to read fine print on documents and screens.
- Depth perception to operate machinery safely.

Standing and Walking:
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking throughout the manufacturing facility.

- Ability to lift and carry a certain number of full sheets of material with great care, with a total weight ranging from approximately 35 to 40 pounds, depending on the type of material.
- Occasional lifting of heavier items with the assistance of equipment or team members.
Bending, Stooping, and Kneeling:
- Regular bending, stooping, and kneeling to inspect machinery, perform maintenance tasks, and handle materials.
- Flexibility to work in low positions and confined spaces as needed.
Reaching and Handling:
- Frequently reaching overhead and below shoulder level to access materials and operate machinery.
- Manual dexterity to handle small parts and tools accurately.
Pushing and Pulling:
- Ability to push and pull carts, equipment, and materials as needed within the production area.
Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
- Regular use of PPE, including safety glasses, gloves, ear protection, and safety shoes.
- Compliance with all safety protocols and regulations regarding PPE usage.
Work Environment:
- Exposure to a manufacturing environment with varying temperatures, noise levels, and potential hazards.
- Tolerance for working in conditions that may include dust, fumes, and strong odors.
Physical Stamina:
- Endurance to work extended hours, including overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays as production demands.
- Ability to remain alert and focused during long shifts and high-pressure situations.
