Description
The health and safety manager will be a key member of the FIFA Infrastructure and Technical Services Team and closely collaborate with other functional areas, various other relevant tournament functional areas and key individuals responsible for developing and delivering health and safety standards and operations at FIFA World Cup sites in Canada, Mexico and the United States of America.
THE POSITION
The primary responsibilities and oversights of the health and safety manager for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ include:
- Develop and execute health and safety plans in the workplace according to legal guidelines
- Prepare and enforce policies to establish a culture of health and safety
- Manage and lead the Occupational health and safety for all 16 stadiums and training sites
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to enhance operational efficiency and ensure a safe working environment
- Ensure safety protocols are followed during the build and design phases of stadium events, including the setup of scaffolding, fencing, and media tents.
- Work closely with fire inspectors to ensure compliance with fire safety standards, especially concerning temporary kitchen setups and propane storage.
- Implement safety measures and protocols for work conducted at heights, rigging installations including the use of fall protection systems.
- Oversee operations in confined spaces, ensuring all safety regulations are adhered to and proper training is provided.
- Ensure safe handling and operation of pyro and fireworks, conducting risk assessments and coordinating with relevant authorities.
- Develop and deliver training sessions on health and safety policies, procedures, and necessary licensing/certification for all staff.
- Develop and deliver weather monitoring practices for all sites which includes implementation of emergency preparedness and response strategies including training sessions for all staff.
- Identify potential safety risks and implement mitigation strategies to reduce incidents and enhance overall safety.
- Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of all stadium facilities and events to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incident reports, and training sessions, providing detailed documentation as required.
- Communicate safety policies and updates to all stakeholders, ensuring clear understanding and compliance across teams.
- Investigate accidents or incidents to discover causes and handle worker's compensation claims
- Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures
YOUR PROFILE
Education & Qualifications
- Proven experience as health and safety manager in event- and/or industrial operations
- Bachelor's degree or similar
- Deep understanding of legal health and safety guidelines within markets in USA, Canada and Mexico.
- Deep knowledge of standard safety guidelines within USA including but not limited to ANSI E/ES.
- Ability in producing reports and developing relevant policies
- Good knowledge of data analysis and risk assessment
- Excellent organizational and motivational skills
- Outstanding attention to detail and observation ability
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities
- BSc/BA in safety management or relevant field is preferred
- Valid qualification in occupational health and safety
Work Experience
Minimum requirements:
- Minimum five years of experience in the management of complex, multi-stakeholder health and safety projects with a proven track record in the industry of global events in the role of project leader;
- Experience in creating project concepts and coordinating their implementation;
- Experience in working as part of a multi-cultural team and in working across countries remotely;
- Proven track record in fostering, building and maintaining relationships with groups of experts and stakeholders;
Preferred additional experience:
- Demonstrated experience working in the field of sports and events and, in particular, mega sporting events;
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with local governments and other governmental entities to plan and execute health and safety initiatives in host countries;
- Knowledge of and experience in working with international safety standards and conventions;
- Strong project management skills, including coordinating and overseeing resource management projects from inception to completion;
- Experience in stakeholder engagement and community outreach initiatives to ensure a safe working environement
Languages
- Fluent in English, Spanish proficiency is a plus
