Full Description
Equine Research Officer
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is the governing and regulatory body for horseracing in Great Britain. It is the BHA’s role to act for and on behalf of the whole sport, ensuring that the highest standards apply on and away from the racecourse. It is responsible for promoting, and regulating the sport, which is at the heart of a major leisure and entertainment sector, a leading betting product and the focus of an important breeding sector.
We are currently looking to recruit an enthusiastic and dedicated Equine Research Officer to join the existing friendly and supportive Equine Regulation, Safety and Welfare Department, based at the Centre for Racehorse Studies (CRS), Newmarket. The Centre for Racehorse Studies is located within the British Racing School (BRS), and up to 10 Thoroughbreds are cared for whilst they are part of studies which are conducted to provide information and advice to vets and trainers regarding medication use in racehorses.
Main Responsibilities
- Daily management and welfare of the horses at CRS, including feeding, ridden and non-ridden exercise as required, turnout, supervision for farrier and vet visits, as well as involvement in the sourcing of horses and liaison with our re-homing partner.
- Ability to ride horses recently off the track.
- Liaison with BRS staff, student inductions to the CRS and oversight of students whilst they are working with our horses.
- Full preparation for and participation with research studies, including monitoring and sampling of horses.
- Contribute towards providing 7 day per week coverage for the above. Flexible working will be possible as this role will overlap with another Equine Research Officer position.
Essential Skills and Knowledge
- Recent practical work with horses and excellent understanding of the welfare and management of Thoroughbred horses.
- The CRS operates under a Home Office License, and the Equine Research Officers are required to hold a Home Office Personal License – training will be provided.
- Prepared to work with a high degree of flexibility, including some unsociable hours such as weekends and bank holidays.
- Excellent communication, organisation and horse handling skills.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, and as part of a busy team.
