Help Us Tell the Story of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

In just under 64 days, Glasgow will transform into a global hub for sport and culture, welcoming 3,000 athletes from 74 nations, across 11 days of unforgettable Commonwealth Games action, fuelled by the city’s unstoppable energy and passion.

Glasgow 2026 is set to revolutionise the Games, with a bold experience that reflects the city’s resilience and innovation. This is more than just an event, it’s a movement – a celebration of unity, equality, and sporting excellence. A movement that will not only deliver a world-class sporting experience but will also create a lasting legacy, maximising social and economic benefits for the city and the Commonwealth.

If you have a passion for major events, sport, festivals and culture, alongside a drive for high quality narrative storytelling, then Glasgow 2026 wants you.

Project Scope: Editor-in-Chief

We are seeking an exceptional Editor-in-Chief to join Glasgow 2026 at Games-time and lead the story of a new era for the Commonwealth Games.

This is the person who will make the Games feel alive, visible, urgent and unmissable. Acting as the senior editorial voice and right hand to the CMO, you will hold the golden thread across sport, culture, city experience, legacy, partners and human-interest storytelling, turning a brilliantly delivered event into something people feel, talk about and do not want to miss.

You will define the daily story, set the tone, identify the golden moments and ensure Glasgow 2026 lands with impact across media, content, social and campaign channels. You will shape what the world talks about: the headline, the image, the athlete, the city moment, the emotional story, the viral spark.

Responsibilities include:

  • Owning the Games-time editorial narrative and daily story priorities.
  • Setting the tone, themes and messaging architecture with the CMO, and Marketing, Communications and Content Leadership.
  • Joining up sport, culture, city activation, festival, legacy, partners and content into one powerful story.
  • Leading the Games-time editorial rhythm so every day has focus, momentum and impact.
  • Identifying and driving standout PR moments, story arcs, iconic images and human-interest opportunities.
  • Guiding proactive media agenda-setting and earned media impact.
  • Overseeing narrative alignment across content, social, PR, marketing and owned channels.
  • Rapidly spotting emerging moments and amplifying them with confidence.
  • Supporting senior Games communications leadership in moments of pressure, helping shape clear, calm and effective messaging.

Location:

The Games Communications Hub will be based in Glasgow City Centre, and this service is to be delivered in person by the appointed freelancer.

Time Commitment:

The role will ideally commence from 15 June 2026 for an 8-week period until 7 August 2026. Our Games-time communications operation stands up from early July and becomes fully operational from mid-July. This role will include extended days and weekend working during the critical Games period, with shifts aligned to the wider C3 and Games Communications Hub operation.

Fee Structure:

The role is paid on a fixed-fee basis. Interested parties should submit a competitive rate and quotation for the services required, confirming availability from 15 June to 7 August 2026. Your rate should account for extended hours and weekend working during Games-time operations.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • You will bring senior editorial, communications or newsroom leadership experience, ideally in a major event, sport, cultural or high-profile live environment.
  • You will be a brilliant storyteller, sharp editor and confident decision-maker, someone who can see the full picture, make the call and bring teams with them. You will understand how to turn moments into headlines, how to create emotional resonance, and how to move fast without losing judgement.
  • You will be calm under pressure, collaborative, audience-first and highly creative, with the ability to shift language from corporate to bold, human and compelling.

Why Glasgow 2026?

This is an unmissable opportunity to help shape the future of the Commonwealth Games. Glasgow 2026 will bring together world-class sport, culture, city energy and human stories in a bold new model for major events. As Editor-in-Chief, you will help write the headlines, set the tone and make sure the Games are felt far beyond the field of play. This is your chance to be at the centre of something historic and to help make Glasgow 2026 impossible to ignore.
