SENIOR LEGAL COUNSEL, EVENTS

BASED IN LONDON


The successful candidate will support the Events and Media division of World Rugby to ensure the successful delivery of World Rugby’s revenue and fan engagement strategic goals and the global growth of the game. The candidate will provide support to the General Counsel, Events and Media in providing strategic legal advice on commercial issues including the staging of World Rugby events, the exploitation of commercial rights and generation of revenue, the growth of fans, intellectual property, data protection and technology related agreements.


The candidate will possess outstanding communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills and have previous experience in a similar role.


TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Provide strategic legal advice to the Media and Events division to drive forward its commercial programme of generating revenue and attracting fans.
  • Act as a trusted business partner, providing ongoing legal advice on day to day matters which reflects the risk appetite of the Events and Media business.
  • Fully understand the organisation’s strategic objectives, anticipate issues and identify proactive solutions to eliminate or mitigate risk.
  • Deliver high quality and commercially relevant legal advice in a timely manner aimed at appropriately managing the organisation’s costs, risks and ensuring compliance with applicable laws.
  • Protect the interests of the organisation by ensuring it meets corporate governance obligations including managing the legal aspects of company formation and establishment of Local Organising Committees (LOCs) and also fostering a proactive risk culture.
  • Provide strategic legal advice on the drafting and negotiation of various high-value complex commercial arrangements including audio-visual, sponsorship, production, merchandising and licensing agreements.
  • Provide strategic legal advice on the drafting and negotiation of various commercial agreements relating to digital content, media production and distribution, marketing and platforms activity which drives interest in the game.
  • Provide legal expertise and business support to the organisation’s procurement and contract management processes including procurement, tendering and related contract negotiations of various supplier agreements including MSAs.
  • Provide legal advice to the organisation on the legal implications of the organisation’s current and planned activities.
  • Provide legal support to World Rugby’s experiential activities, including hospitality, sports presentation and in-event performances.
  • Provide strategic legal advice to the Competitions and Events team and provide legal and governance advice on tournament allocation processes including competition structures and related documentation, for example, creating Terms of Participation.
  • Provide legal guidance and input into specific tournament areas such as tenders, hosting arrangements, venue hire, host city, accreditation, commercial activations, rights protection and other tournament initiatives.
  • Provide strategic legal advice to Technology on “business as usual services /MSAs” and Event-specific technology requirements.
  • Formulate World Rugby’s IP strategy and provide advice on general trademark, design, copyright and domain name issues and manage the protection and enforcement of IP rights on World Rugby’s international trademark portfolio.
  • Provide support on the creation, implementation and management of Rights Protection Programmes across World Rugby Events.
  • Manage World Rugby’s data privacy obligations to ensure compliance with legislation while facilitating the fan engagement strategy.


SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:


  • An experienced legally qualified professional in a common law jurisdiction with a minimum of 5 -7 years PQE.
  • Excellent negotiation skills and a proven ability to negotiate commercial and procurement contracts in a timely manner while managing risk.
  • Proven experience of all aspects of legal sports commercial rights.
  • Proven experience of dealing with all aspects of contract law.
  • Proven experience of dealing with intellectual property rights.
  • Working knowledge of data protection.
  • An active interest in sport and its wider impact
