SENIOR DEVOPS & INFRASTRUCTURE ENGINEER
Location: Old Trafford Stadium Complex

The Purpose: 

The position of Senior DevOps & Infrastructure Engineer involves responsibility for the development, deployment, and operational management of the Manchester United cloud and on-premise infrastructure. This role includes technical tasks related to DevOps practices and infrastructure management, supporting both cloud-native and traditional IT systems.
A critical aspect of this role is providing robust technical support during high-pressured match day events, ensuring the reliability and smooth functioning of all essential systems when performance matters most.
Collaboration with the Data Science team helps align infrastructure and deployment pipelines with their analytic and computational needs.


The Role: 

Cloud Infrastructure & Environment Management

  • Designs, deploys, and manages scalable services on Azure App Service, Azure Container Instances (ACI), Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), and AWS platforms.
  • Implements Infrastructure-as-Code solutions using Terraform, Bicep, and ARM templates.
  • Manages and optimises Azure and AWS environments for performance, availability, and cost-efficiency.
  • Configures and supports Enterprise Applications, Azure Active Directory (Azure AD), Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), and Key Vault integrations.

CI/CD & Automation

  • Builds and maintains CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions.
  • Automates build, test, and release processes to improve deployment reliability.
  • Creates reusable templates and artefacts to enable team self-service and GitOps workflows.

Infrastructure Support, Endpoint & Desktop Management, and Complex Azure Environment Oversight

  • Provides comprehensive infrastructure support, monitoring, and troubleshooting to ensure robust platform stability and minimal downtime.
  • Skilled in managing endpoint and desktop environments across diverse operating systems, including deployment, configuration, security updates, and user support for both remote and on-premise workforces.
  • Experienced in managing large-scale, multi-tenant Azure environments, overseeing resource organisation, governance policies, and secure networking architectures.
  • Proactively addresses scalability challenges, implements disaster recovery solutions, and ensures compliance with security best practices in complex enterprise Azure deployments.



Key Responsibilities

Cloud Infrastructure & Environment Management

  • Design, deploy, and manage scalable services on Azure App Service (AAS), Azure Container Instances (ACI), Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), and Amazon Web Services (AWS) platforms.
  • Implement Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) using Terraform, Bicep, and Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates. 
  • Manage and optimise Azure and AWS environments for performance, availability, and cost-efficiency. 
  • Configure and support Enterprise Applications, Azure Active Directory (Azure AD), Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), and Azure Key Vault integrations.

CI/CD & Automation

  • Build and maintain CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment) pipelines using Azure DevOps (ADO) and GitHub Actions (GHA).
  • Automate build, test, and release processes to improve deployment reliability.
  • Create reusable templates and artefacts to enable team self-service and GitOps (Git-based Operations) workflows.

Monitoring, Observability & Performance 

  • Use Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Log Analytics, and AWS CloudWatch for observability.
  • Conduct performance tuning and proactive monitoring of cloud and on-premise systems.
  • Set and monitor Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and lead incident response and reviews. 

Security, Governance & Compliance

  • Apply cloud-native security best practices across Azure and AWS platforms.
  • Implement compliance policies and conduct regular audits to ensure regulatory alignment.
  • Maintain governance and cost control measures, including rightsizing and auto-scaling.

Infrastructure & Networking 

  • Support and maintain server platforms, IP networks, firewalls, and telecommunications systems.
  • Manage Microsoft Endpoint Manager (Intune), Autopilot, and desktop build images.
  • Provide technical leadership for high availability and disaster recovery solutions. 

Collaboration & Enablement 

  • Work closely with Techology, Data Science, and business teams to deliver projects and improve platforms. 
  • Mentor IT Service Desk teams and contribute to documentation and knowledge sharing. 
  • Provide support during high-pressure events such as match days and other critical periods. 



Key Requirements: 

Essential

  • Expertise in Azure and AWS cloud environments.
  • Proficient in CI/CD, Infrastructure-as-Code, and containerisation (Docker, AKS).
  • Strong scripting skills in PowerShell, Python, and Bash.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Teams, and Office 365 apps.
  • Knowledge of networking technologies (TCP/IP, DNS, VOIP, Firewalls, switches).
  • Familiarity with Active Directory, Group Policy, and technical documentation.


Desirable

  • Experience with GitOps tools (ArgoCD, FluxCD).
  • Support experience with IIS, SQL Server, and web-based applications.
  • Understanding of MacOS, iOS, and hybrid device environments.
  • Practical knowledge of ITIL, ISO27001, and compliance standards.

  • Hours: 35 hours per week, with flexibility to meet business demands.
  • Location: On-site support required during match days and other key events.
