Position Title: Paralegal

Location: Headquarters office DC (2 days a week in the office)

Department: Legal

Reports to: Chief Legal Officer and Secretary

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Hourly rate for USA Based Staff: $26.67 - $37 per hour

Position Summary: 

The Legal Department provides support and guidance to Special Olympics Headquarters departments and programs, Regions, and accredited Programs, assisting Special Olympics in achieving its mission, goals and strategic objectives and providing timely, effective and efficient legal advice. Exceptional organization, attention to detail, consistency, and task management are critical to this role.

The Paralegal’s role will be to manage and master routine Legal Department tasks, including but not limited to the following:

Responsibilities:

  • Support Legal Department staff and day to day functions;
  • Maintain records of ongoing Legal Department matters;
  • Interact with internal and external clients of the Legal Department;
  • Prepare and review written correspondence;
  • Maintain organization of all electronic records on iManage;
  • Prepare and review routine consulting agreements;
  • Review planned gifts and estates agreements;
  • Perform routine and complex research projects;
  • Manage government filings related to fundraising activities, lobbying, and Executive Orders;
  • Co-manage the accreditation process for 200+ worldwide Special Olympics Programs;
  • Communicate regularly with regional staff regarding the accreditation and other related matters for the 200+ Special Olympics Programs;
  • Maintain record books of Board of Directors and Board Committees;
  • Provide administrative and logistical support to the Nominating Committee;
  • Correspond with Board members;
  • Review and update internal organizational policies and forms;
  • Work with Special Olympics leadership and regional offices to increase the number of Special Olympics athletes employed worldwide;
  • Support staff visa requests for business travel and the application process for long term work visas;
  • Occasional travel to regional conferences and competitions;
  • Provide support on all litigation matters; and
  • Support all risk management and insurance related matters.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Paralegal Certificate from accredited institution or program
  • Experience with paralegal work in a nonprofit corporate law department
  • Familiarity with legal research, administrative filings, compliance and contract administration
  • Ability to draft correspondence and memoranda
  • Ability to present complex issues in a simple and lucid manner
  • Ability to interact with internal and external clients as well as team members
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Power Point, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously

Desired Qualifications:  

  • Familiarity with corporate law, estate planning, trademarks, accreditation, state registration, and litigation
  • Familiarity with government filings
  • Familiarity with drafting employment and simple consultant agreements
  • Previous work with boards of directors
  • Proficiency with iManage and/or Smartsheet
  • Previous work with individuals with intellectual and development disabilities
  • Familiarity working in an environment with colleagues from across the globe and understanding cultural differences
