Location: Carrington Training Complex

The Role:
The First Team Doctor plays a vital role in supporting player health, performance, and overall well-being. This position is responsible for delivering high-quality medical care to First Team players, including the diagnosis, treatment, and management of injuries and illnesses. The role also encompasses providing emergency medical support during training and matchdays, as well as working collaboratively with other medical and performance staff to ensure a holistic, player-centred approach to care.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Player Medical Care & Treatment: Support the Head of Medical Services in providing medical care, injury assessment, and treatment to first-team players. Diagnose and manage injuries, illnesses, and conditions affecting performance. Develop personalised treatment plans with physiotherapists and prescribe medications in line with best practices and anti-doping regulations.
  • Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation: Collaborate with the medical and performance teams to develop injury prevention strategies. Assist in conducting pre-season screenings and oversee rehabilitation, ensuring safe return-to-play protocols while monitoring workload to prevent overuse injuries.
  • Matchday & Training Ground Duties: Provide medical support at first team matches and training sessions as directed by the Head of Medical Services. Assist with on-field emergency care, including concussion management and trauma care. Ensure medical equipment is up to standard and provide pitch-side coverage at Carrington and Old Trafford.
  • Medical Compliance: Maintain accurate and confidential medical records, ensuring compliance with medical regulations, including anti-doping policies. Support injury updates to management and align with the latest medical research.
  • Multi-Disciplinary Team Collaboration: Work with the Head of Medical Services, physiotherapists, sports scientists, nutritionists, and other medical staff to optimize player health and performance. Participate in medical meetings and align medical decisions with Football Management to support team objectives.
  • Emergency & Crisis Management: Assist the Head of Medical Services in leading the club's medical emergency response. Support concussion protocols, coordinate player referrals to specialists, and contribute to emergency action plans for Carrington and Old Trafford.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Oversee and support the Senior Doctors for the Women's Team and Academy as needed. Attend player appointments for surgeries and medical examinations and contribute to developing concussion management protocols and ensuring adherence to Clinical Governance practices.

The Person:
Qualifications:

  • Full GMC registration
  • MSc or Diploma in Sports Medicine; BASEM member.
  • Experiences in injury prevention, recovery, and CPD with diverse clinical skills.
  • FA-recognised First Aid Qualification (Football League standard).

Skills and Competencies:

  • Extensive experience in high-performance sports, including professional football, with proven expertise as a Team Doctor in elite environments.
  • Deep understanding of football regulations, anti-doping, and compliance.
  • Strong clinical skills in sports injury management, advanced clinical examination, and matchday medical cover, including emergency response.
  • In-depth knowledge of common sports injuries and effective treatment options, with a focus on player welfare.
  • Proficient in collaborating within multi-disciplinary teams and developing medical protocols.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks in high-pressure situations.
  • Willingness to travel for games, tours, and tournaments, committed to upholding the highest standards of care.
  • Professional and discreet in media interactions.
