A professional football club based in the city of Stoke-on-Trent, Stoke City were formed as Stoke Ramblers in 1863. They are the second oldest professional club in the world behind Notts County and were one of the 12 founder members of the Football League.
Since 1997 their home has been the bet365 Stadium and they currently play in the second tier of English football - the EFL Championship - after a recent 10-year spell in the Premier League.
Among their most famous former players are Sir Stanley Matthews, who had two spells with his home-town club and is the only player to have been knighted while still playing football, and England’s 1966 World Cup winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks.
Nicknamed the Potters after the city’s rich pottery and ceramics industry, the club won it’s one and only major honour in 1972 in the form of the League Cup.
