The Centre for Physical Recreation and Sport is the home of sport at Newcastle University.

At Newcastle we believe that time spent at University should be so much more than just getting a degree or a place of work. The Centre for Physical Recreation & Sport (CPRS), in conjunction with the Athletic Union and its 50+ Sports Clubs, offers an exciting range of sporting opportunities for both students and staff.

The strategy for sport at Newcastle University is focused on the three core functions of performance, participation and external engagement with a philosophy of sport for all.

Performance Sport aims to maximise the performance of our representative teams and individual athletes. Newcastle is one of the leading universities for sport in the UK and is consistently ranked within the top 12 out of 152 HE institutions in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) rankings.

Campus sport is the umbrella term for all our sports participation programmes which includes the Intra Mural and Exercise Class programmes and a wide range of Healthy Campus Activities. The Intra Mural Programme is aimed at the recreational player and provides opportunities for students not in university teams to compete in six sports on a weekly basis. The Exercise Class Programme operates throughout the year at the University Sports Centre and consists of up to 20 classes per week. The classes are for all ability levels and taught by fully qualified instructors. The Healthy Campus Activity Programme aims to encourage students and staff to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Activities consist of campus walks, come and try sessions, lifestyle workshops and various one off sport activities.

External engagement is primarily concerned with our role in the local community through the medium of sport. Our Sports Volunteer Programme places students into local schools, sports clubs and community groups where they have the opportunity to gain a wide range of qualifications, develop their life skills and make a real difference to the individuals within these groups. Both students and the groups and individuals that they work with gain invaluable experience.

This wide range of sports programme is supported by an extensive portfolio of sports facilities based over 4 sites. It is this potent mix of sports facilities, sports programme and over 50 student led sports clubs supported by a team of dedicated professional staff that ensures that there is something for everyone – whatever your ability or experience – from student to staff, from casual user to club session, from novice to elite performer.
